In-person auditions for 2021-2022 Tucson Philharmonia will be take place at the Hotel Tucson-City Center, located at 385 N. Granada Avenue (at 6th St.). All required health protocols will be followed at the audition site.

Auditions will be held for the following instruments:
WOODWINDS: Flute, Piccolo, Oboe, English Horn, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon
BRASS: Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba
STRINGS: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass

Auditions will be held for the spring semester only if vacancies exist.

A 10-minute audition time will be assigned to each applicant. Auditions will be scheduled between 9:00am and 3:00pm.

beginning Saturday, July 31.

The deadline for an audition time is Thursday, August 26.
The TPYO Membership Application and the $25 Audition Fee should be submitted
on the audition day (not mailed).

Professional musicians will judge the auditions and placement into the orchestra will be based on the ability level demonstrated at the audition. Each applicant will receive a written evaluation of the audition.

Tucson area and other Southern Arizona musicians through high school age (18 years of age) are eligible for membership in the Tucson Philharmonia.
Also eligible are previous Philharmonia members up to age 21.
There is no minimum age for membership, but applicants in grades 8 and lower may audition only with a brief recommendation letter from their private teacher emailed to info@TPYO.org.

Musicians who are previous TPYO members and still meet the eligibility requirements can request a position in the 2021-2022 Philharmonia - WITHOUT a re-audition - by submitting the Application Form by email or by USPS mail no later than Saturday, August 28.

Audition Requirements

Solo piece of the applicant's choice (totaling 2-3 minutes) demonstrating musical and technical abilities, played without accompaniment. Instead of one solo piece, applicants may play two or three contrasting regional or all-state etudes, orchestral excerpts, or other etudes (totaling 2-3 minutes)
Percussionists should demonstrate skills in the two basic areas: snare drum and mallets (xylophone - two mallets), with a maximum of three minutes per instrument.

As appropriate for applicant's instrument, two or three octave major scales up to five sharps and flats, played at moderate tempo, with any desired articulation or bowing.
Percussionists will be asked to play two scales on the xylophone.

Two short sight-reading excerpts will given to each applicant by the audition.

The audition results and 2021-2022 orchestra roster will be sent by USPS mail on August 31.

Seating/Playing Assignments
Seating assignments in the string sections and playing assignments in the wind/percussion sections will be determined by music checks utilizing excerpts from the performance repertoire sent with the audition results. Music checks will be held on September 11 (winds/percussion) and September 18 (strings).
