AUDITION INFORMATION

DATES
Auditions will be held for all positions in the 2010-2011 Tucson Philharmonia on two days:

Wednesday, September 8, 2010
WOODWINDS: Flute, Piccolo,Oboe, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon
BRASS: Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba
PERCUSSION

Saturday, September 11, 2010
STRINGS: Violin,Viola, Cello, Bass
HARP
PIANO

All positions will be filled in the fall. Auditions will be held for the spring semester only if vacancies exist.

LOCATION
Armory Park Center
220 S. 5th Avenue at 12th Street

TIMES
A 10-minute audition time will be assigned to each applicant. Auditions will be scheduled between 3:30 and 7:30 pm for winds and percussion (Sept. 8); and between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm for strings, harp, and piano (Sept. 11).

ADJUDICATORS
Panels of professional musicians will judge the auditions, and placement in the orchestra will be based on the ability level demonstrated at the audition. Each applicant will receive a written evaluation of the audition.

ELIGIBILITY
Tucson area and other Southern Arizona musicians through high school age (18 years of age) are eligible for membership in the Tucson Philharmonia.

Also eligible are previous Philharmonia members up to age 21. There is no minimum age for membership but applicants in grades 8 and lower may audition only with the recommendation (brief letter) of their private teacher.

PREVIOUS MEMBERS
Musicians who are previous TPYO members and still meet the eligbility requirements can request a position in the 2010-2011 Philharmonia - WITHOUT a re-audition - by submitting the Registration Form with the $25 registration fee by Saturday, September 11 (postmarked or hand-delivered to Armory Park Center by 3:00pm).
NOTE: If the registration form to request a position is NOT submitted by the September 11th deadline, the position will be released for the 2010-2011 auditions and the former member will be required to re-audition for a position.

 

Audition Requirements

SOLO
Solo piece of the applicant's choice (any section, totaling of 2-3 minutes of music) demonstrating musical and technical abilities, played without accompaniment. In place of one solo piece, applicants may play two or three contrasting regional or all-state etudes, orchestral excerpts, or other etudes (totaling 2-3 minutes).

Percussionists must demonstrate skills in the three basic areas: timpani, snare drum, and mallets (xylophone or marimba), with a maximum of three minutes per area.

SCALES
As appropriate for applicant's instrument, two or three octave major scales up to five sharps and flats, played at moderate tempo, with any desired articulation or bowing.

SIGHTREADING
Sight-reading of two orchestral excerpts selected by the adjudicators.

 

Results
The 2010-2011 Membership Roster results will be mailed to each applicant immediately following the conclusion of the auditions on September 11, 2010.

Seating/Playing Assignments
Seating assignments in the string sections and playing assignments in the wind/percussion sections will be determined by music checks on September 25 (winds/perc) and October 2 (strings), utilizing excerpts from the performance repertoire.
