Audition Information
 

2023-2024 AUDITION DAY
Auditions for positions in the 2023-2024 Tucson Philharmonia will be held on
Saturday, August 26, 2023.
Second-semester membership only is permitted, provided the applicant auditions for a
position on the Audition Day.
The auditions will be held following any heath protocols required by the Armory Park Center.

Auditions will be held for the following instruments:
WOODWINDS: Flute, Piccolo, Oboe, English Horn, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon
BRASS: Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba
PERCUSSION
STRINGS: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass
HARP
PIANO

Auditions will be held for the spring semester only if vacancies exist.

LOCATION
Armory Park Center
220 S. Fifth Avenue at 12th Street. (see map)

TIMES
A 10-minute audition time will be assigned to each applicant. Auditions will be scheduled between 9:30am and 2:00pm.
Audition times can be scheduled either by emailing info@TPYO.org or by texting (520) 623-1500 beginning Saturday, July 31.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE
The deadline to schedule an audition time is Thursday, August 24.
The TPYO Membership Application and $25 audition fee should be submitted on audition day (not mailed).

ADJUDICATORS
Professional musicians will judge the auditions. Placement into the orchestra will be based on the ability level demonstrated at the audition. Each applicant will receive a written evaluation of the audition.

ELIGIBILITY
Tucson area and other Southern Arizona musicians through high school age (18 years of age) are eligible for membership in the Tucson Philharmonia.
There is no minimum age for membership, but applicants in grades 8 and lower may audition only with a brief recommendation letter from their private teacher emailed to info@TPYO.org.
Also eligible are previous Philharmonia members who graduated the previous year (class of 2023).

PREVIOUS MEMBERS INFORMATION
Musicians who are previous TPYO members and still meet the eligibility requirements can request a position in the 2023-2024 Philharmonia - WITHOUT a re-audition - by submitting the online Application Form by email or by USPS mail no later than Saturday, August 26.

Audition Requirements

SOLO
Solo piece of the applicant's choice (any section, totaling two minutes) demonstrating musical and technical abilities, played without accompaniment. Instead of one solo piece, applicants may play two or three contrasting regional or all-state etudes, orchestral excerpts, or other etudes (totaling two minutes). Memorization is NOT required.

Percussionists should demonstrate skills in the three basic areas: snare drum, timpani, and mallets (xylophone, two mallets), with a maximum of two minute selection per instrument.

SCALES
As appropriate for applicant's instrument, two or three octave major scales up to five sharps and flats, played at moderate tempo, with any desired articulation or bowing. Memorization is NOT required. Percussionists will be asked to play two scales on the xylophone.

SIGHTREADING
Two short sight-reading excerpts will be given to each applicant at the audition.

RESULTS
The 2023-2024 audition results and seating audition excerpts will be sent by USPS mail on August 30.

Seating/Playing Assignments
Seating assignments in the string sections and playing assignments in the wind/percussion sections will be determined by music checks on utilizing excerpts from the performance repertoire sent with the audition results. Music checks will be held on September 9 (strings) and September 16 (winds/percussion).
